SNOOKER TOURNAMENT
OPOTIKI AGAIN VICTORIOUS ROTORUA FAIL TO LIFT CUP The Opotiki team again withheld the second challenge from Rotorua in a snooker tournament last week. Mr Snowy Howard’s saloon was again well filled by local enthusiasts to see Opotiki win 5 games to the visitors’ 2.
Jumbo Apanui in his old model Buggatti. had Ins machine tuned up er Townhill. He was taking the er Townhill. He was taking the bends beautifully and in the final lap gave the old crate the juice to win hanclsomelv.
O. Waterman in his miniature Teraplane had nothing to spare in getting the verdict from Corbett. His machine was knocking badly at the start and it was not till the final lap that he made up leeway to win in a photo finish. Jacko Fay in his Bitza came to grief badly when he tackled Paul who drove a fine race. Jacko changed his juice from Red Ethyl to 100 high octane and the mixture was too strong for his old frame to take the strain.
Billy Allen in his latest model Willys-Knight was of no use to Reid who lapped him time and again. It definitely was not “Willy’s night” but the other fellow’s. He would do better on a lower grade juice. His low compression engine “pinked” badly and his timing had also slipped. Jack Young in a Hupmobile had Matheson as an opponent and gave the spectators a thrill, in the last lap just missing a bad crash. He recovered however, to come again in the run home to win going away. Ray Young had his latest model Sunbeam in great order and soon had Coma in a coma trying to catch him. His cornering was beautiful to watch and when he opened out in the straight he gave nothing else a chance.
Cooky Ross in his Fiat had Clark against him. Both put up a poor display. In the run to the finishing post both machines were missing badly and Cooky was lucky to limp home by a narrow margin. The winner is reported to have had an accident earlier in the week, a jack slipping and hurting his arm. He hopes to be in better shape next race, while there is a rumour he will also have a faster model.
Mi- Rowly Webb was the official starter and judge, and gave every satisfaction. Snowy Howard was the lap scorer. Hori hopped in the other day and purchased a motor car. The old chap must be getting tired of wearing out shoe leather, or perhaps business is looking up or so expanding that he finds it necessary for a faster means of locomotive. Look out for Tim old chap!—Opotiki News.
