SUCCESSFUL SCOUT RALLY

COMPETITIONS AT OPOTIKI

WIN FOR THORNTON TROOP

Over three hundred Scouts and Cubs participated in the annual County Rally for the Bay of Plenty which was held in Opotiki last Saturday for the first time. The Thornton troop came a good first with 1560 points and with Tauranga a close second with 1521 points. The day was generally voted a great success and a genuine credit to those who had assisted in its promotion.

The weather was perfect and from the general parade down Opotiki’s main street to the Camp Fire and r ‘Scouts Own’ service on Sunday morning the whole event went off without any major hitch whatsoever. It was unfortunate that the usual.ambulance tests for the Tiki trophy were not held as in the past, this being due to the fact that the judges for the event were not available. The Rally however was remarkable for the number of new pioneering tests which were held and which undoubtedly had a very wide appeal for the general public. Troop colours waving the parade reached the recreation area shortly after 10 a.m. From then on the Rally was intensified. The County Commissioner acted as Rally Chief, with Mr R. Stewart as his assistant, Commissioner Roberts (Tauranga) and Scouters R. Herbison, C. Dean, J .Marsh, D. Worrall and Mr E. Hughes acting as judges together with a number of Opotiki residents. The tent pitching was a spectacular event, though the signal tower and the flag-staff construction certainly took the public eye and won warmest approbation. Opotiki in winning the latter deserve warm ■commendation for their team work and application. In the Cub section, Thornton’s Pack also carried off first honours making a splendid showing in all events. The greatest public interest centred round the jungle dances and the novelty relay. Opotiki residents surpassed themselves in hospitality in meeting the demands of their first Rally. Some 140 boys were billeted in the town ■over the weekend, while the catering for the Rally itself left nothing to be desired, and the ladies concerned are to be warmly congratulated. Details of the events were as under:—
