WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

WHAKATANE MEETING

The monthly and general meeting of the Whakatane Women’s Institute was held in the Methodist Hall on March 4.

Mrs Smith- vice-president, opened a well attended meeting with the Institute Song and Aspirations. Before handing over the chair to Mrs K. Stewart Mrs Smith presented Mrs K. Stewart, Mrs Hannah and Mrs Ryde with shoulder sprays. Apologies were received and two new members enrolled.

Mrs Stewart spoke of the poor attendance of members at the Garden Party. Mrs Comer read the individual points—totalling 91£ from possible 100 —gained by the Institute at, the A. and P. Show. Final arrangements were made for taking part at the Eisteddfod to be held on March 27. A collection was taken, up . to go toward the present being sent by combined N.Z. Institutes to Princess Elizabeth on the occasion of her 21st birthday. Mrs Norman Carter gave a solo which was very much enjoyed. Mrs King Jnr. read a report on the past' year’s working of the Institute. The convenors of the different Circles gave their reports. Mrs Print, Arts and Crafts; Mrs Fennell, Gardening Circle; Mrs'Murphy, Drama; Mrs K. Stewart, Singing. Mrs Stewart as treasurer, read the balance sheet. After a number of officers had been appointed, Mrs Withy, V. 0., gave a short address. The golden thread, ‘What I have enjoyed most at the meetings,’ was well responded to. A pleasing diversion from business was the serving of afternoon tea. The voting then started for president and committee. Both nominees for president polled the same number of votes, so they agreed to co-operate, and each take the chair for six months. Ten members were elected as a committee.

The meeting ended with the singing of the National Anthem. Competitions were as follows: Best flower: Mrs Comer 1, Mrs Fennell 1. Apple cucumber: Mrs Smith 1. Jam Tarts: Mrs King Jnr. 1, Mrs Comer 2.

The points prizes for the year r were as follows: —A: Mrs Comer 1, Mrs Moran runner-up. B and C: Mrs Fennell 1, Mrs Cairns runnerup. Garden Party The W.W.I. Garden Party was held at the Misses Ramson’s residence on February 13. There was a well-stocked bring and buy stall which did brisk business. The competition winners were:— Target Croquet: Mrs Sims. Bell Croquet: Mrs C. Pearson. Clock Golf: Mrs Otley. Taipo: Mrs Dodds. Patatoe Opius: Mrs Dixon. Hidden lucky number 51 (not claimed).

A pleasant afternoon was brought to a close with the serving of after-

noon tea.
