Pleasantly Naive
A visit to the Corpus Christi Naval Air Training Station in California by Mr H. W. King, who spent eight or nine years in Auckland, provoked the following comments in a letter to relatives: “In the guardhouse I came across several marines who were stationed in Wellington. We really got talking and I can tell you they sure could not praise New Zealand, its people and the country, highly enough. Everyone liked it there. One corporal even said that the people were too nice—too many guys took advantage of them. And the girls—well that’s a real subject in itself. What lovely girls, and how pleasantly naive! We all wished we had a few of them here. On that base several New Zealand girls are married to U.S. servicemen. They are highly respected and held in high esteem.”
