Old Documents
For .the compilation of data in connection with the early history of New Zealand for presentation to the Royal Commission of inquiry into claims by members of the Maori race into areas known as “surplus lands of the Crown, it has been necessary to search official documents, some of which were 100 years old, said Mr V. R. Meredith, counsel for the Crown, at the first sitting of the commission. Referring to one document, Mr Meredith said as only a single copy was avail T able in the Auckland library it had been necessary to obtain permission to have photostat copies made. Many of the documents were so old and in such poor state of preservation that other photostat copies had to be made for the big file produced by counsel.
