I Not a Promotion In March last year Mr W. S. Goosman’s Batal was victorious in the Franklin Cup, with the brilliant Verdant runner-up. Since then he has not been a radiant success on the flat, and as he has been nominated for the Hack Hurdles at Waikato, it may be presumed that he will be tried as a hurdler. A G.N. Winner Esperance Bay who had the misfortune to sustain a broken neck while in the jumping contest at the Auckland Show, won the Great Northern Hurdles in 1941. In stakes he won over £4OOO. A Firm Favourite Although allotted 9-.12 in the Sydney Cup, a weight not entirely prohibitive but still difficult to win under, Golden Souvenir is a firm favourite for the Sydney Cup of two miles. After a Respite Phoenix, a winner at Te Rapa recently, scored two years ago in the Pahiatua Cup, one mile and a quarfei • He has certainly not been overlaced, and is likely to race prominently during the rest of the season. Hunting Camp It would appear that Hunting Camp is a better performer at Te Rapa than elsewhere, for this season he has won three sprint events there, while at Mtatamata and Te Aroha he was unplaced.
