N.Z. SCIENCE STUDENTS
ARRIVAL IN AMERICA VISIT TO RESEARCH LABORATORIES Full opportunity to learn at first hand the most modern processes and technique in industrial research has been taken by the party of New Zealand science students at present visiting the United States and Canada. As a result of arrangements made in New Zealand by the Atlantic Union Oil Company they were met on their arrival in New York by officials of the parent company( and were taken on a tour of inspection of the Bayway Refinery and research laboratories at Linden,, New Jersey. The party comprised Misses Joy Osborn, Pamela Wilton, Christine Spencer, Barbara Gibbons and Messrs. James Land and John Relling.
After being met at their hotel, the students were taken in special cars to the laboratories, where the work was explained by the officer in charge, Dr. Holt. Two Laboratory technicians, Miss Bell and Miss Fisher, accompanied the party on the tour of inspection to demonstrate the varied processes and techniques. Among the points inspected were the engine test laboratories, the aviation fuel test stands, the “bug” fai’m and a tour of the refinery yard and installations.
Lunch was served in the refinery cafeteria, and later in the afternoon all in the party were presented with mementoes of their visit.
Following the visit the party was the guests of the company at tea and cocktails at the famous WaldorfAstoria Hotel, Where they were interviewed by no fewer than 10 Press reporters and photographers. During the social a warm welcome was extended by an official of the company, who recalled many incidents during his many visits to New Zealand in connection with the Atlantic Union Oil Company, and presented each of the party with an inscribed copy of the book, “The Future of Industrial Research.”
The party is expected to sail again for New Zealand on March 20 from San Francisco.
