TE PUKE BEATS WHAKATANE POST OFFICE COONEY CUP Last weekend the Whakatane P. and T. cricket team descended on Te Puke in a bold bid to take away the tobacco tin called the Cooney Cup. A very happy day resulted for most of the contestants but there is much argument as to who may be styled the Te Puke hero of the day. Captain Ball retired at 74 in the first innings and at 40 in the second innings, while lan Farquhar piled up 35. The next biggest scorer was Mr Extras—2o in the first innings. Gordon Rundle says he won the match by taking five wickets for 40 runs in the difficult second Whakatane stroke, but against this it can be recorded that the wickets were in the way three times when Bill Flowers bowled.

From a purely factal point of view we cannot gloss over the fact that the demon Farquhar took three wickets for four runs in the second innings and General Sargent took five for 17 runs. £33S f* ’ ~ . ’

Bob Whittington actually gave his life blood to the cause. A ball ran up his bat and hit him in the mouth, doing considerable damage to his lips and gums. Even this did not keep him quiet. In his second innings “that man Ball” tried to sneak a run. Bob raced along the mat at a mile an hour and in spite of sliding the last ‘’ten yards on his belt buckle the tidy appearance of the wickets was disturbed before he rolled to the crease. A noble effort —but Captain Ball should definitely be relieved of his command. Showing great team spirit Whittington held his hands open (instead of his mouth) and fielded a beautiful catch off a strategic bowl by “Hoppy.”

Postmaster H. J. Smith was unable to participate in the game but was an interested spectator. Looking at the matter truthfully we should say he saw more flying birds than runs.

Whakatane brought three ladies to keep the score (and this may account for any inaccuracies!) and they successfully acted as extra fieldsmen.

Te Puke won the match as Whakatane in the first innings made 39 and 141 in their second stroke. Te Puke made 152 in the first innings and played for 80 in reply.

Quite a number of the team are expecting cables from Australia after their outstanding efforts.
