Top of the List The Gainsborough horse, Hyperion, is top of the sire’s winning list in England again this season with 32 winners of 88 races and stakes £32,990, Precipitation being second with 14 winners of 26 races and £29,926.
For Autumn Racing Among the thoroughbreds shipped to Australia from Wellington last week were Golden Souvenir and Kerry Lad. In due course the cable news will doubtless include reference to the track performance of this pair. Racing Into Form
The three year old colt, Aylesbury by Defaulted—Lady Drake, whose preparation has not been hurried on account of his commanding stature, is now being raced into form, and his third in the Whatawhata Handicap at Te Rapa to the well conditioned Beau Devoir and Silver Lap was a creditable performance. Trainer M. Conza, of Te Aroha, who has the greater part of his team racing in the West Coast, South Island circuit, may be said to be making turf history for up to date he has won eleven events with Vonettee, Race Lad, Sitlogy and Glamis Pal during the tour.
Nearly Ready A candidate that should be improved by his Te Rapa effort in the Puketata Handicap is Hippodrome, who although not fully attuned, ran a close second to Phoenix, the mile being traversed in lmin. 39 215 secs. Racing Taxation
As racing txation in respect to its last meeting the Whikato Racing Club contributed to the Treasury £8662. The sport occupied five hours, which works out at £1732 8s per houx* as the Goveimment’s shai’e.
A Valuable Importation It is reported that a full brother to the English Derby winnei’, Air Borne, has been purchased for New Zealand, and is likely to ai’rive shortly. The purchaser is an Australian businessman who has wide interests in this Dominion.
Place Betting In England tui'f pati’ons have come to the conclusion that very often it is not worth while backing a horse for a place. In this Dominion such is frequently the case, but the majoi'ity of investors do not have time to mentalise the probabilities. Liberal Prize Money For the principal event at the Wellington Autumn fixture the club has allotted £3OOO in stakes. Maidens and hacks are not eligible for nomination.
Awaiting Transport Legal Folly, purchased last month by Mr E. Murrell, of Sydney, has not yet, owing to transit difficulties, been shipped to Australia. She is still being trained at Takanini by T. F. Verner, and will be raced in New Zealand pending shipment. Master Meruit
The Dominion’s champion steeplechaser of a season ago, Master Meruit, who then sustained a partial breakdown, is being hacked about at Gisborne by his owner, but will not be raced during the coming winter, it being desired that he should make an absolute recovery from any unsoundness. It is intended that Sleepy Fox shall contest the North Island Challenge Stakes at Trentham next month, and then go on to New Plymouth to take his place in the Taranaki Stakes field. The Monarch Retired
The Croupier gelding, The Monarch, has been retired from the turf. During his racing career he started 9 Btimes for 14 firsts, 10 seconds and 11 thirds, his prize money totalling £6688 10s, an average of over £IOOO per year.
