SURF CLUB DISPLAY

GISBORNE CLUB S VISIT INTENSE INTEREST AT OHOPE A remarkable display of surf riding and life saving was given at Ohope Beach last Sunday, when members of the Gisborne Club visited the resort for the purpose of assisting forward the recently formed Ohope Surf and Life-Saving Club. The day was perfect and the heavy sea which was running lent a degree of realism to the exercises which was fully appreciated by the hundreds who made up the crowd of interested spectators. The physique of both visiting teams (ladies and gentlemen) was a point of general comment and the .general impression given was one of perfect health, efficient training and keenness on the part of the individual members in order to equip themselves for the high purpose of their voluntary calling. The smartness and bearing of the teams likewise won for the demonstrators the warmest approbation and the picture of the high stepping athletes, bronzed and fit, taking part in perfect unison in the various exercises was a sight never to be forgotten.

The demonstrations included land drill; reel work; actual saving from the sea, by hand and reel recovery; resuscitation of the apparently drowned and display and marching. The greatest interest was taken in each item and applause greeted every well-executed movement. The president of the Ohope Club <Mr C. H. Brebner) on declaring the reason open, took the opportunity ■of publicly thanking the visitors for their excellent exhibition, which he assured them, had gone a long way towards establishing the local club. He hoped to see as well trained and •as efficient a group operating on Ohope in the future. The visitors made many friends 'during their visit and it is hoped that they will be able to carry out their promise to revisit the district on the first available opportunity.
