THE JAYFORCE TIMES

NEWS AND PICTURES FOR SERVICEMEN IN JAPAN New Zealand servicemen in Japan will see a picture of the Wanganella safely moored at Wellington the night of her release from Barrett’s Reef when they open their latest copies of Jayforce Times, the bright-ly-written and profusely-illustrated weekly newspaper which is published by the A.E.W.S. of Army Headquarters in Wellington. The latest number of Jayforce Times which bears the date of February 15, though it actually went to press a week previously, is now on its way to Japan in an R.N.Z.A.F. Dakota, and all being well, should be in the hands of the men of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. and the R.N.Z.A.F. nine days after the plane left Whenuapai: . Editor of Jayforce Times is Captain H. L. Heatley, who was on the staff of the Bay of Plenty Beacon from its inception until, he left to join the 2nd N.Z.E.F. in 1940. His experience with army newspapers in the Middle East (where he edited the N.Z.E.F. Times) is reflected in an admirable choice of' news, illustrations and headings which should appeal to all classes of reader among the New Zealanders in Japan. Begun as a small newspaper when the first J-Force arived in Japan, the Jayforce Times has expanded into a weekly journal that compares favourably with the best weekly papers published in New Zealand. There are 16 pages in the number just off the presses and more than 40 illustrations. These range from midsummer scenes at the popular Wellington beaches of Oriental Bay and Lyall Bay to snapshots of the visiting American tennis players and athletes.

Informative articles about New Zealand include one about war novels that have been written by New Zealand servicemen, another about the fruit harvest in Nelson orchards, and a page of the stage exploits of the Kiwi Concert Party both in wartime and peacetime. Seven pages are devoted to outdoor sports, with pictures of the Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta, the tennis matches in which American Davis Cup players took part, as well as racing and trotting items and pictures.
