Scout Street Appeal Readers are reminded of the street appeal being conducted today in the interests of the local Scout troops. Stalls will be established at Kopeopeo, and in the Strand. Donations in cash and in kind will be warmly appreciated.
Citizens Band Uniforms
Two uniforms, the property of theWhakatane Citizens’ Band Committee are apparently astray, and are needed in preparation for the forthcoming Band Contest at Te Aroha. Any person knowing anything of their whereabouts is asked to contact the Bandmaster, Mr W. J. Jarrett.
School Store Shed The Whakatane School Committee has authorised the construction of a small store shed on Jhe grounds for the purpose of storing the physical training gear. The shed will be built by the pupils under the supervision of Mr Wild, the woodwork instructor as part of their training.
Edgecumbe Parent-Teacher Concert A full programme of first-class ’ items is promised for the concert, promoted at Edgecumbe, by the. local Parent-Teacher Association, which takes place on February 25th next.—Items, will be supplied by the Women’s Institute, and by Mr H. Hauesler and other artists. An innovation «, will be the supper which will follow for the small charge of 6d. Ladies are asked to bring a plate and a cup. ■• r ■ “First Things First” A new version of i“putting first things first” is described by an Aucklander who has just returned from a remote part of the North Island, where there is a temporary hotel bar. On entering the premises he was surprised to notice bank notes ! and coins stacked in boxes and books around the counter, although a safe was standing in the background. The reason was soon obvious, for when he ordered a whisky the bottle was produced with affectionate care v from the safe! •
Surf Club’s Display The public is reminded of the display by eighteen members of the Gisborne Surf Club at Ohope on Sunday next at 2 p.m. The visiting surfers who are the guests of the newly-formed Ohope Club are considered ,to be amongst the best on . the coast. The display which will include alarm drill, rescue resuscita- s tion and surf-sking will last 1| hours in all and an informative commentary will be given by loud . speaker. All interested in any way are warned .mot to miss this unique display/
R.S.A. Welcome French
At no time in the history pf man had there been more need for goodwill and tolerance among nations than at present, remarked, the president of the Auckland R.S.A., Mr A. P: Postlewaite, when welcoming members of the company of the French sloop La Grandiere at a- reception given by the R.S.A. Speakers at the gathering, which was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress, the French and American Consuls and high-ranking officers, , recalled the cordial relations which existed between French and New Zealand servicemen during the two world wars.
Local Agency For Boat Sales
An agency which should meet the . growing local demand for lake/river and sea craft, has been established by Mr Fred Abbott, of Whakatane. On,view in his premises at the present time is a first class dinghy-de-luxe, which is a sample of the agency he has established for ‘Su-preme-craft’ the well known Auckland boat builders, who are prepared - to undertake orders for craft of all types and descriptions. The substantial dinghy now on display is constructed of first class Kauri, and is a model of workmanship and classical design. Mr Abbott is bent upon, developing the trade in guaranteed, craft which will be both an asset and an attraction to the town and its district. The model on, display, a 12 footer is actually priced lower than similar craft on sale in Auckland. P.B.A.
