Chatham Island Races
“One of the jolliest day's outlings I have ever enjoyed was at the New Year’s Day race meeting at Waitangi,” said a Christchurch man who recently returned from the ChathamIslands. “There was no totalisator and no bookmaking, and the betting was between one and another, though half-crown sweeps were also popular. Practically the whole population was there, and more than 200 horses were tied to the fence. There was great excitement when, in the principal event, the Chatham Island Cup, Detonator just beat Sir Fernando, last year’s winner and a hot favourite. The hack race was a genuine one, limited to horses that had had no special training, and they had to be ridden by their owners. A Maori boy named Clifford, only about 12 years old, won it, riding a splendid race.”
