POPULAR SUMMER SHOW
WIDESPREAD PUBLIC INTEREST SPECTACULAR RING EVENTS ATTRACTIVE DAIRY SECTION
Despite a chilling sou-westerly, the Whakatane and Rangitaiki A. and P. Society’s Annual Summer Show which took place last Saturday attracted a gratifying attendance. For the first time for many weeks overcoats were apparent on all hands, but interest in the events and the show exhibits was never relaxed and a large crowd lined the rails watching the equestrian events which took place throughout the afternoon. The gate which realised £260 was almost as large as that taken for previous years. Had the weather been kinder it must have been a record. On the whole, the show may be regarded as a great success, despite Ihe unfavourable weather conditions which ruled throughout the day.
In the Heavy Horse Section there was the usual dearth of entries, and as in the past, one or two competitors monopolised the placings. The ring events, however, attracted a large entry of riders from all parts, and the display in all respects was well up to standard. The lady riders were particularly prominent this year, giving some splendid displays. Miss B. Blomfield, of Gisborne, who ••captained the Champion Hack is to be warmly congratulated on her exhibition. The hurdling was distinctive and never failed to draw the warmest applause, once again achieving the show’s reputation as an exhibition producing some of the finest horsemanship to be seen in the South Auckland. Mr Earle Johnson judge of this section, expressed the warmest praise for the type of horse which participated. In the Bay of Plenty Championship ring and hurdling event which carried the jraviest prize money of the day, first place went to C. Davis with G. Leggitt second and Mrs Roan third.
The competition in the cattle section was keen, though entries did not appear to be as many as other years. However, again the standard was very high and drew complimentary remarks from the judges concerned. The best of these came from Mr L. Dickson, judge of the pig section who said that he regarded the Berkshire exhibits as the best he had see anywhere. They would he said be equal to any pigs anywhere. The Large Blacks and Large Whites, he said, had astonished him. They were really excellent and ranked amongst the finest which the country could produce. The highlight of the afternoon was - the Grand March. It commenced about 3 p.m. Headed by the Pipe Band the parade was a spectacle in itself. The competitors of the girls’ marching events followed the' band, and drew applause for their smartness and bearing. The equestrian Section came next, and was one of the largest seen in Whakatane. Next came the Jerseys with the subsidiary dairying sections following. The heavy horses brought up the rear. A pleasant reminder of the return of peace and the re-appear-ance of normal industry was a parade of new model 1947 cars and trucks of many makes. This latter .section was quite a feature in itself. In thanking the exhibitors and the public for their co-operation and patronage the President of the Association, Mr W. Howat, said that it gave him the greatest pleasure to witness the support which had been forthcoming from all parts of the district. He thanked his committee members and mentioned in particular the Young Farmers’ Clubs of the Whakatane area, from whom, he said, would be drawn the Show officials of the future.
Another pleasing interlude was the presentation of the cup and medals to the winners of the Girls’ Marching competition. These were won by the Ngongotaha team, and in making the presentation, the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, offered his warmest congratulations to all who had participated. The points in this competition were’as under:— Ngongtaha 239 Tauranga 238 Whakatane 230 Te Puke 190 The trade exhibit stands occupied a larger section than usual, and drew considerable attention throughout the day. Conspicuous of this display were- the number of new model cars of a dozen makes, together with some large and powerful looking trucks and tractors. The side-shows were likewise a popular feature, and drew a substantial crowd throughout the day. The Association is to be warmly congratulated on its splendid work in the promotion of the show, and -we particularly compliment the President, Mr W. Howat, and the hard working Secretary, Mr Hamilton Morgan, on whom the main burden •of responsibility devolved.
