DEATH OF AL CAPONE
FORMER CHICAGO GANGSTER DIES Al Capone,. the former American gangster, has died at the age of 48. Members of his family, including his wife, son, brothers and his aged mother, were at the bedside. A physician said that Capone's wife collapsed and is in a serious condition.
Hearing the news, callers and tourists flocked to Capone's island estate where there was a virtual promenade of the curious. They stood round chatting, some laughing. A line of motor cars waited while callers were admitted to the 25-room villa where Capone died.
He was wealthy when he died, although his associates describe him as a heavy gambler who, during his heydey as a gang overlord lost £500,000 in two years in betting on racehorses.
Capone died a caricature of the notorious “Public Enemy” who threw Chicago into a war for gangster supremacy. His mind wandered, in his last years he shambled when he walked and, according to those who knew him, he was ’ a child in thought.
