WILLIAMS CUP TO TAURANGA WHAKATANE DEFEATED By defeating the United Cricket Club (Whakatane) by the narrow margin of seven runs on the first innings last Saturday at Tauranga, the Tauranga Club was successful in the challenge for the Williams Cup, which is held by the champion club team in the Bay of Plenty. United won the toss and put the visitors in to bat, the first wicket falling with only 19 runs up. A stand by L. Elvy and B. Budd carried the score to 31 before the former was dismissed with 14 runs to his credit. J. Smyth was dismissed without increasing the total, but the next three batsmen performed well at the crease the sixth wicket falling with .the score at 114. Budd topscored with 31 runs, his total including one six and three fours. C. Eves (29), J. Clarke (26) and T. Pickett (25) were the only other batsmen to do well. When the last wicket fell 147 runs were on the board.

Bowling for United, N. Rigden secured six wickets for only 39 runs. W. McKenzie bowled 28 overs, including 12 maiden overs, to capture three for 45.

A good opening partnership by Le Pine and Treadwell enabled United to make a good start when they appeared at the batting crease, and when the first wicket fell 45 runs had been compiled. Crawford topscored with a valuable 34 runs while the other principal run-getters were Treadwell (29) and Le Pine (28). The last wicket fell with 140 runs up, seven short of Tauranga's total. Bowling for Tauranga, Budd secured five' wickets for 52 runs off 28 overs, five of which were maiden overs. Eves and Clarke took two wickets each for 45 and 25 runs respectively. Scores:—
