"The Caretaker" Even the Prime Minister of New Zealand.cannot rely upon universal recognition. Recently, on his way to' the Mount Cook Hermitage,. Mr Fraser stopped at Tekapo for lunch, and like most,, visitors, paid a visit, to the church, which stands on an eminence overlooking the turquoise blue lake. A young woman with a camera approached him there and asked permission to take a photograph of the church. When the Prime Minister disclaimed all authority in the matter the amateur photographer replied: "Oh, I thought you were the caretaker!" National Savings
Last week, 296 quota areas in .the Dominion obtained -their weekly quotas of national savings. Ail the principal centres were successful and in all postal districts the full district objective was attained. Nine additional places recorded the attainment of the full year's quota, making the number of such successes to date 236, out of the 335 quota areas in the Dominion. At the corresponding date of the pre-. vious financial year, only 127 such successes had been recorded. The, progressive increase in depositor strength of the savings groups indicates that this system, whereby regular weekly savings are made byway of salary or wage deductionsat the places of business or employment, is steadily gaining in popularity. During the last nine months 133 new groups have been established and these, with additions to pre-viously-established groups, show a total increase of 7000 group depositors for the period.
