ON LICENSED PREMISES
FOUR MATATA MAORIS
SUBSTANTIAL FINES IMPOSED
Four Maoris, Thomas Paranara, Edward Patrick, John Tairua and Phillip Keepa, together with a pakeha, Douglas Schuster, were charged before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Whakatane Magistrate’s Court yesterday with being found on licensed premises at Matata on December 20 and 21 when such premises were required by law to be closed.
Tairua and Patrick failed to appear. Police evidence showed that the offenders had been found in the backyard of the hotel near the door leading to the bar. They could offer no reasonable excuse. With regard to Paranara and Keepa, evidence was given that they were discovered drinking beer in a house at Matata, and there were several other bottles also on the premises. Paranara, Keepa and Patrick were fined £2 on each of two charges plus costs 425, while Tairua and Schuster were fined £2 and costs 265.
