CAMP BREAK-UP

SCOUTS AT ROTOMA BRIGHT CAMP FIRE The Scout camp at Lake Rotoma, broke up last Saturday morning after one of the most enjoyable annual camps under the Bay of Plenty Association. The dispersal was again an exciting business, as each unit pulled out to the accompaniment- of cheers and farewell banter. On Friday night the usual campfire ceremony was enacted with Commissioner Lofley as leader. Fully a hundred visitors were present from the district and from the lake baches. The programme was informal and thoroughly enjoyable, the visitors participating in the camp fire rounds and choruses. A pleasing feature was ceremonial naming of two prominent Scouters Commissioners Matthews and Lofley who were given their Scout names Curlew and Sky Hawk respectively. This was done simply by writing the new name on a piece of green willowbark and throwing the rejected end bearing their correct name into the fire. Addresses were given by the County Commissioner and by Mr B. S. Barry, Mayor of Whakatane, who was amongst the guests. Tha gathering broke up with the serving of a light supper to the guests and finally the singing of ‘taps.’
