RECENT MATCHES

Under the long continued spell of dry weather the Whakatane Bowling Club's greens at Apanui have been in keen demand. Club activities have been intensified and the rinks have had to stand up to a severe strain. The following are details of recent matches: —

Sumner, Howat, E. J. Bell and i Caisley 20 beat Kingdon, Davis, Wilson and Warner 15; C. R. Wilson, Jas. Bell and Hollis 32 beat Anstis, Thompson and Tippett 13; Hay, Royal, Pearson and Hayward 22 beat Cockerell,, Brown, Pettit and Burgess 16; Gerring, Head, White and Hellyar 28 beat W. Smith, R. F. Smith, Shaw and Grant 23; Campbell, Salmon, Alexander and Chamberlain 24 beat Breckon, McGowan, L. King and Howat 20. Smith Stars Compton, Rutherford, Coates and Smaljon 22 (holders) beat Sims, Carling, Bennett and Little John (challengers) 17. ANNIVERSARY DAY TOURNEY A very enjoyable (if somewhat warm) tourney was held on Anniversary Day, the greens being keen and rather tricky. The section winners were teams skipped by G. Oswald and P. Smoljan, both teams scoring four wins. Sensational Finish Oswald's team got away to an early start scoring 2 points on the first head; 2 points on the second head, 2 more on the third head, and five points on the fourth head, so being 11 up, with only three heads to go. On the fifth head, Smoljan scored six points, three more on the sixth head and so needed three on the last head to win. The skips changed ends with Smoljan lying three up, Smoljan drew another. Oswald overplayed the head, Smoljan played a back bowl with his .last and Oswald played short with his last, leaving Smoljan the winner 13—11. The winning team was C. H. White C. R. Coates and P. Smoljan (skip). TANEATUA SHIELD GAME LOCAL TEAMS CHOSEN The following players have been chosen to play for Whakatane at Taneatua tomorrow. Players to assemble at club's grounds at 1 p.m. J.
