WEST END LUXURY
DR. EDITH SUMMERSKILL CRITICISED West End luxury hotels and restaurants were accused of cornering the market of offals at a meeting of Hackney's Anti-Black Market Committee. Mr E. F .Hill, secretary of the committee, said that in Smithfield Market offal was regularly bought up by hoteliers and restauranteurs, with the result that London butchers received no supplies. The chairman, Mr C. H. Darke, president of Hackney Trades Council, criticised Dr. Edith Summerskill, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food, for not being present to answer questions. “We asked Mr Strachey, her boss, to come along,” he said, “and were told that he was too busy but that Dr. Summerskill would deputise for him.” The meeting decided to hold an anti-black market week to organise committees in every street and tenement, and to send a deputation to housewives to discuss measures to beat the black market with Mr Strachey.
