~ •• •• ifn» Donation to Sea Scouts
Prompted no doubt by the Dominion Sea Scout Regatta now in process at Tauranga, Mr B. Sladden of Taneatua, has donated, the sum of £5 towards the Whakatane SeaScouts boat fund. He is desirous of lending a little more energy towards the boys trained for the sea, which is impossible without the assistance of a regulation sailing craft, and invites others of a like mind to help swell the fund. Donations will be acknowledged from time to time through this paper.
Effect of Alcohol
An interesting test to determine the effect of alcohol on an experienced motor driver was recently carried out in England. The “victim” was a young volunteer' and experienced driver who, though fond of whisky, did not indulge heavily. Before the first test the man had no drink, and when the stop sign was flashed on the screen he braked in 0.75, representing 31 feet travelled before stop was effected. At a second attempt .05s was registered, equal to 22 feet. Following a drink of whisky by the driver the test continued and .08s was registered, equivalent to 35 feet. This time was repeated after two more whiskies, but following the fourth, three tests gave .09s, 2.45, and 1.45, equalling 39.5 feet, 106 feet and 61.5 feet respectively. All the tests were made at speeds around 30 m.p.h. A medical examination was made after each test, and the man’s pulse rose from 76 to 100.
Murphy-Jones Contest
A referee and two judges will be used for the handling of the boxing contest between Bos Murphy and Willie Jones at the Petone recreation ground on Saturday night Referee will be Len Stewart, with A. McKenna and H. Domney as judges. Under the rules of the N.Z. Boxing Association the referee will have no say in a points’ decision unless the judges disagree. In that event “the referee shall intimate his decision, to the announcer who shall announce the decision.”
Hockey Tour Abandoned Because of transport difficulties between Australia and New Zealand, the Indian all-service hockey team, which was to have toured New Zealand, will be unable to visit the Dominion this year, said the secretary of the N.Z. Hockey Association, Mr W. H. Down. Arrangements had been made but the mishap to the Wanganella finally prevented any immediate consideration of the project. Wrapping Bread or Beer
“The health authorities are responsible for the regulations prohibiting the issue by bakers of unwrapped bread,” said Mr C. G. Dunham at the Matamata County Council meeting at Tirau recently, during a discussion on bread supplies, “but it is noteworthy that when during the war years wrapping paper was absolutely unobtainable by bakers, there was an ample supply at hotels for wrapping bottles of beer.”
New State Houses Concrete State houses are to be built at Stratford, and for the first time in Taranaki the “no fines” system, which produces a concrete wall of the honeycomb type' will be attempted. “No fines” (sand) is used so that the void between the aggregate (chips) is left void and not filled. This results in a honeycomb effect, the idea being that water cannot seep through, but passages • are left for the air to circulate, making for warm buildings in cold, weather and cool in summer. '-No timber is .used in the walls and very little in the whole house. Finding Reserved Seats A welcome innovation at the Wel-j lington Railway Station as far as> Auckland travellers are concerned is the new notice board erected over the entrance to No. 8 platform. This shows very clearly the composition of the train by carriage letters, prominently printed, hung on hooks between the words , “engine” and “guard’s van” enabling reserved seat holders to see at a glance where their carriage is placed in the. train. .
