INSTITUTE MEETING GARDENING CIRCLE The December meeting of the Waimana-Nukuhou Women’s ' Institute Gardening Circle was held at Mrs R. White’s home and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. Two competitions arranged by Mrs White, were won by Mrs Hewitt and Mrs Mitchell, and Mrs Cooper and Mrs Mitchell. The vegetable garden was in great order and deserves special mention. The day’s competitions were: Best flower, Mrs Ducker 1; Mrs Wylde 2; Mrs J. Mitchell 3. Best vegetable, Mrs Cooper 1-; Mrs J. Mitchell 2; Mrs White 3. Decorated dinner plate, Mrs Wylde 1; Mrs White 2; Mrs Cooper 3. January Meeting The January meeting was held at the home of Mrs Hughes and a good attendance of members was present.. Mrs King presided. The cultivating and growing of carnations and Gladioli was well discussed, and also the growing of egg plant tomatoes. During the meeting Mrs Wylde demonstrated the making of a “Sand Lady,” Mrs B. Hughes Jnr. and Mrs Ducker acted as judges. The day’s competitions were: Best flower, Mrs R. White 1; Mrs Wylde 2; Mrs Hughes 3. Best vegetable, Mrs Cooper 1; Mrs J. Mitchell 2; Mrs S. Eagle 3. Large bowl flowers arranged for effect, Mrs Cooper 1; Mrs J. Mitchell 2; Mrs Woolfield 3. The garden was quite bright with flowers, although the storm had caused some damage.

Mrs King, at the conclusion of the meeting, thanked Mrs Hughes for the pleasant afternoon, and also the hostesses and judges.

SUCCESSFUL DANCE SCHOOL FUNDS BENEFIT The dance held at the Nukuhou North School last Friday evening for school funds was very successful, the sum of £l2 being taken. The Monte Carlo and Statue Waltzes were well entered for. Mr J. Cranswick and Mr F. Sterling acted as M.C’s most capably. After supper had been served by the ladies of the School Committee, Mr S. Mottram thanked one and all for attending and helping to make the function the success it was. Dancing continued until a late hour.
