NEW SAFETY FLARE
Soon, it is imported, many trawlers will carry a new type of distress signal, the Schermuly parachute. This consists of an outer case containing a parachute, to which is affixed by steel wires a powerful flare. To work the signal, a pin is pulled out and the whole equipment thrown overboard. In forty-five seconds the flare ignites, and with its parachute attached shoots skyward a thousand feet, the parachute preventing the flare from falling while it burns for almost a minute. This long and high burning gives a distress signal which has a better chance of being seen than an ordinary rocket which burns only for a few seconds. Indeed, it is claimed that the parachute flare has a light of 150,000 candle-power, and can be seen for fifty miles around.
