OUT-PATIENT SERVICE

NEW HOSPITAL EXTENSION POSITION TO BE INVESTIGATED The Whakatane Hospital Board has decided to take immediate steps to investigate the possibilities of establishing an out-patient service department, to be run in conjunction with the hospital itself. The matter . will be the subject of a special report later. Introducing the subject, Mr H. C. McCready said that it was time the Board woke up to its responsibilities in this connection and established a service such as that at present in force at Rotorua, where some 24,000 patients were treated annually in this way. The Chairman said he agreed, and added that in connection with the recent complaint before the Board, he had conferred with all the local doctors who had agreed that there should be a complete local coverage of town and district whenever one of their number was away. Mr McCready: In the face of what has happened we’ve got to establish an out-patient’s service. Why should any person take a risk when it could be avoided by a little common sense. Any person coming to the hospital should be looked at!

At Mr Suckling’s suggestion, Mr McCready amended his motion to conform with that outlined in the introduction to this article. Mr Suckling then seconded and the motion was carried unanimously.
