WHAKATANE BOWLING CLUB WEEKEND PLAY Fine weather during the weekend brought a large number of local bowlers to the Whakatane Club’s greens at Apanui where a series of good matches took place. Following are detailed results of games played : Campbell, Brown, Salmon and Mclsaac (s) 29 beat McGowan, C Head, White and Darvill (s) 16; Davis, A. C. King, Wood and Littlejohn (s) 18 drew with Bullot, Rutherford, Hellyar and Coates (s) 18; Wells, Pezet, Jensen and Smoljan (s) 20 beat Hay, K. Schofield, Oswald and McLeod (s) 14; Sims, J. W. Wilson, Pearson and Good (s) 21 beat Rice, E. J. Bell, Bigelow and Burgess’(s) 20; Breckon, Howat Jr., Schofield and Caisley (s) 31 beat Compton, Dainton, Chamberlain and Berg (s) 7; Anstis, R. C. Wilson, McKenzie and Warner (s) 27 beat McGill, J. Bell, Morpeth and Hayward (s) 12. Smith Stars C. White, Alexander, G. Head and Howat Sr. (s) (holders) 19 lost to Thompson, Carling, Drube and Harris (s) (challengers) 23. Handicap Pairs The finals of the Handicap Pairs were played last Saturday, when J. Rutherford and R. Wilson (s) with two lives met J. Murphy and W. S. Henderson (s) with one life. Murphy and Henderson won the first game by one point placing both teams on an equal footing. In the final Wilson wanted 4 to win on the last head, but was unsuccessful, Murphy and Henderson taking the honours. PICNIC TOURNAMENT A successful picnic tournament was sponsored by the club last weekend when eighteen teams competed for the winning honours. The tournament took the form of five games held in two sections. ‘A’ Section was won outright by Walker’s team from Ngongotaha. ‘B’ Section was won by G. Oswald’s team (Whakatane). In the final, P. Fraser, R. F. Smith J. Alexander and G. Oswald (s) claimed an easy victory, B—l.
