STATE HOUSE BLOCK
NEW AREA IN BOROUGH
KOPEOPEO EXPANSION The fact that the Housing Department was desirous of commencing operations on a large area of land at Kopeopeo in which will probably *be constructed some two hundred units came as an interesting piece of information to the Borough Council last Monday evening. The Department emphasised its • desire to commence work on the sections immediately, though it was ad'.mitted that a certain amount of lev- } elling would have to be carried out. The Council was asked if it carried any town planning scheme whereby the layout of the new area could be fitted in with the town’s normal ex- ' pansion. It was felt that King Street would probably include a shopping area in future and any relevant information on this subject would be welcomed. In connection with the above Mr C. E. L. Thomas (Housing Department Engineer) waited on the Council and discussed details of the proposed new plan of subdivision. Asked by the Mayor what would be the position of sections, in the event of a shopping area being created at King Street, Mr Thomas said that the Housing Department would erect shops which would be ballotted for through the Rehabilitation Department. This was being done in Rotorua and Hamilton. The whole plan was fully discussed and the matter was finally referred to the Works Committee to inspect the block and to bring down a report to the next Council meeting in February.
