WATERFRONT DISPUTE
Sir, —The record of the Communist Party has been anything but peaceful and democratic and for that reason I was astonished to read an article in “Freedom” setting forth the position held by Mr Alex Drennan who is vice-president N.Z. Waterside Workers Union, president Auckland Trades Council, National Councillor N.Z. Federation of Labour and Chairman of National Exe-. cutive of the Communist Party. The article continues by quoting a statement in the official organ of the Communist Party by Mr Drennan. Transport is the lifeblood of N.Z. economy—without it neither imports nor exports internal manufacturing nor trade is possible. He stressed “the potential importance of organised unity among the transport workers can hardly be overstated.” In plain English (which I should say Mr Drennan understands) he is stating that the militant section of labour has our very existence in their hands—ahd it is time your readers realised the position. Transport is also the lifeblood of the people of Britain who saved the world from Fascism and gave us the freedom to refuse to send food ships to her. Is there something sinister at the back of these movements. Yors etc., BEWARE.
