SAFETY REGULATIONS

LATEST ROAD CODE OBLIGATIONS ON PEDESTRIANS In the interests of road safety the Department of Transport has reissued the Road Code and Summary of Traffic Regulations including recent amendments to bring the publication up to date. Of particular importance are the instructions to pedestrians who, often unwittingly, are the cause of embarrassments to motorists when the latter are endeavouring to observe the rules of the road. These instructions are : Always walk on the footpath if one is provided. Before stepping off a footpath make sure that it is safe to do so. Where no footpath is available, keep to the edge of the roadway, and, if one has a reasonably clear view ahead, one should keep to one’s right of the roadway. Before crossing a roadway look first to the right and then to the left, and while crossing keep a careful lookout- Use pedestrian crossing when available. If there is no pedestrian crossing cross the roadway at right angles. Take special care when stepping out from behind parked vehicles. At night it is safer to cross in the vicinity of street or shop lights. If a crossing is reasonably available and the pedestrian does not use it, he or she must give way to motor vehicles while on the road. Loitering on pedestrian crossings is an offence, and pedestrians must comply with the directions of traffic officers.
