House Timber Wastage
Some of the finer quality New Zealand grown timbers such as oak, ash, elm and walnut which could well be used at the present time to help overcome the acute shortage which exists for these woods, are being sawn up and used for firewood. An official of the State Forest Service in Wellington said that the reason for this was that people obtained twice and sometimes three times the price for the wood when it was cut for firewood than when it was milled for timber. Another factor was that the trees were usually*, grown in small numbers and their value as a millable proposition was lessened as they were not. in sufficient quantity to justify being cut for timber.
