MORE LAND WANTED
H.B. CANNING INDUSTRY There was plenty of scope for the development of the canning industry in Hawke’s Bay, provided the land was made available, said Mr J. Wattie, managing director of J. Wattie Canneries, Limited, at a meeting of suppliers in Hastings. There were about 250 present. Additional areas required by the factory were: Asparagus, 1000 acres; apricots, 600 acres; prunes, 400 acres; berry fruits, 200 acres; jam ..plums, 100 acres; peaches, 200 acres. Further expansion in the growing of vegetables also could take place. Several growers spoke in appreciation of the proposals and referred to the impossibility of obtaining land, as the present holders were unwilling to sell. The following motion was carried: “That this meeting representing fruit and vegetable growers is seriously disturbed at the lack of land in this district available for returned soldiers and others desiring to
grow either fruit or vegetables, anl they request the Minister to t?’-.e such action as may be necessary, to acquire such land, and that a c. py of this resolution be sent to the Hastings Chamber of Commerce, which should be asked for its support.”
