BOBBY CALF TRADE
PIG MARKETING ASSOCIATION’S YEAR BETTER PRICES PAID The New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association has concluded another successful year in their bobby calf operations. Alto-, gether a total of 348,000 calves were collected and marketed on behalf of the 80 bobby calf pools associated with the company. Of this total 14 pools were in the South Island while the balance of 66 were in the North Island. Pool for pool collections this year exceeded those of last year by 3 a per cent. The nett overall return produced for suppliers at farm gate was £267,524. Of this amount £107,227 was distributed in September last, while the balance in final settlement on collections to November 30th will be paid out as early as possible in the New Year. Condemnations at works for underweight deliveries produced an overall average of 8.1 per cent, which is the same as last year. The average price paid to pool members for all calves over the minimum weight as at farm gate varied as usual according to individual pool costs from 14/5 to 20/7 per x head. These prices represent a substantial increase on payments to producers last year, which is due almost entirely to the higher export values ruling for freezer skins.
