Practice Deplored
The practice of demolishing existing houses for the purposes- of industrial building was brought to the notice of the Rehabilitation Council at its quarterly meeting by Mr W. A. Fox, who instanced a recent case in Auckland. Several speakers contended that industrial building should be postponed to allow housing to be expedited. The Director of Rehabilitation said the reason expressed by the Government for the ' present industrial building was the safeguarding of the industrial future of the country. The matter of demolition of existing houses had been taken up before. The question of other building waiting until housing had been satisfactorily solved could be taken up, with provision made for other essential building. He felt that matters of building controls and other methods of house construction as apart from timber and brick could well be investigated by the Board’s housing advisory committee.
