NEW MERCURY IS BIGGER
SMOOTHER RIDING—MANY OTHER IMPROVEMENTS
The recently anouncecl new Mercury is being received with much enthusiasm. Wherever it has been displayed, the handsome flowing lines of this fine car are attracting great attention. On closer inspection, the Mercury is found to be roomier, larger and lower to the ground, with features to give new riding comfort and new road stability and several engine advancements.
The body takes full advantage of the 2 inch longer wheelbase. Seat width and headroom and legroom have been increased and more room is provided in the luggage compartment.
Styling is in keeping with the greater overall body length and breadth. A bolder treatment is used with the radiator grille extending from fender to fender. Hood moulding and fender strips give a distinct impression of fleetness to the Mercury which is heightened by the use of concealed running boards. The sleek line of the car is retained even in the petrol tank filler. A small door, flush with the fender, conceals the tank cap. Increased Vision And New Ride
Clear vision for driver and pas-
senger has been provided in the new body design. The windscreen is wider and deeper and corner pillars narower. Side windows are broader and the rear window is of one piece curved glass.
Improvements in the body are matched by smooth riding qualities and good balance on the road. Spring's are thinner with more numerous leaves to give a “slow motion” action and the spring base is now 129.38 inches. New transverse stabilisers, front and rear, have given the Mercury improved roadability and handling ease particularly when rounding curves or driving in a cross-wind. A new torsional ride stabiliser controls the spring action, reduces “roll” and keeps the car on an even keel on rough roads. Engine Improvements The engine, of the 8 cylinder Vee type now has four rings instead of three on the lightweight aluminium pistons to give a better compression seal, minimising power waste and improving oil economy. A thermos-tatically-controlled exhaust by-pass automatically regulates the intake manifold temperature, speeding vap-
orisation for better fuel economy. Improved engine efficiency is also given by a new pressure valve radiator cap which permits higher engine operating temperatures. The new Mercury, which is a product of the Ford organisation, is now on display at dealers.
