XMAS PARTY HELD FESTIVE SEASON MARKED , ;i The 1846 festive season was marked by the Whakatane Young Caledonian Club by a Christmas social .. and party, which took place in the
Caledonian Hall last Saturday evening. The function was a marked success, commencing as it did with a Christmas tea, and continuing with a social in the evening, and those present entered into the Yuletide / spirit of the occasion wholeheartedly. i "■ The hall and tables were very nicely decorated for the occasion with ferns, flowers. and . greenery, and presented a pleasing picture. The festive board was indeed well laden for the tea. A profusion of > tasty delicacies was arrayed in op- A. petising order,-and the one hundred odd guests did full justice to the • meal. A full toast list was honoured, : Mr W. Hurst acting in the capacity of toastmaster.^
Feature of the evening was the ar--rival of Father Christmas, and the distribution of gifts off the Christmas tree, which'stood in a blaze of . coloured lights' and decorations, in one corner of the hall. The skirl of pipes announced the arrival of Santa and '/to the accompaniment of ap-.' pla'use and good humoured comment, he selected the gifts, and presented them to the guests. Items during the social were presented by Len Broadmore, who played a cornet solo, Dorothy Stewart, who gave a vocal rendering-, of ’ “Old Rustic Bridge,” and Pipers R. Hurst and B. Thomas, who obliged with a pipe duet. The former-Piper also supplied a pipe solo. “A highlight of the function was - the cutting of the elaborate Christmas cake, this ceremony being performed by the Chieftainess of . the Young Caledonian Club, Miss Maureen Dines. After each of the guests had received a taste, the surplus was sent to the Children’s Ward at the Whakatane Hospital. The social part of the evening, was
under the control of Mr Colin Ran- - by, who, as Master of Ceremonies, t kept proceedings moving at a constantly entertaining pace, whilst excellent music for the occasion was supplied as a gesture by the Premier Band. Before the function concluded, best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy. New Year were extended to all guests by Chief And- .. • erson of the Caledonian Society.
