CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

* MR R. MORPETH NEW PRESIDENT Mr H. G. Warren presided at the annual meeting of the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce which took place in the Borough Council Chambers last Thursday evening. The attendance was poor, the chairman expressing his disappointment but commenting that this was probably due to the meeting being called so close to Christmas. Those present were Messrs. R. Oxenham, E. R. Dillicar, R. Morpeth, M. Lennie, E. L. Jordan, W. Sullivan M.P., Hall, McCallum, A. J. Canning, C. H. Brebner, R. Chapman, G: Dainton. Messrs Mitchell and Dykstra (Murupara) and the Secretary, Mr C. W. Good.

The Chairman referred briefly to the report and balance sheet which had already been circuated amongst members and also published in the Beacon. The election of officers resulted as under:—

President: Mr R. Morpeth. Vice-president: Mr C. J. Jordan. Secretary-Treasurer: Mr C. W. Good.

Executive: Messrs. P. J. Green, R. Oxenham, C. F. Thomas, H. G. Warren, E. R. Dillicar, M. Lennie, R. McCallum. Auditor: Mr R. Mollgaard.

Retailers Sub-committee: Messrs. R. Morpeth, E. Ramson, H. G. Warren, C. S. Armstrong, W. E. Bridger, P. J. Green, C. Hudson. A welcome was extended to the Galatea representative, the chairman stating that he hoped the link with that district would grow and strengthen to the mutual advantage of both communities. Mr Dykstra pointed out that a branch of the Chamber numbering ten members had been formed in Murupara and was meeting regularly. It was ho'ped by the residents of that district to cultivate good relations with Whakatane along business and community lines.
