STUDIO CHATTER
A FEATURE COLUMN HOLIDAY THEATRE SEASON Star Chosen Linda Christian has been chosen as the star to play the part, of the Maori girl in M.G.M.’s new production, “Green Dolphin Street.” A Luckier Break ■ Mervyn Douglas was luckier at the end of World War 11, than at the close of the first World War. Recently discharged from the , U.S. Army as a major, Douglas stepped into a-leading role with Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn in M.G.M.’s “Sea of Grass.” Following the last war, he took a job reading water meters. Intellectual Tramp Red Skelton reports having met the most intellectual, (or the shrewdest) tramp in the world. The panhandler approached the- M.G.M. star on the Hollywood Boulevard and requested the sum of 27 cents. “Twenty-seven cents?” echoed Red in amazement. “What do you want with such an odd figure?” “Well,” replied > the tramp. “Y’see—my library book’s fourteen days overdue!” Costume Changes Richard Hart, Lana Turner’s leading man in “Green Dolphin Street” the period picture with a New Zealand setting, has almost as many costume changes as does the feminine star. Hart has twenty-eight, whilst Lana has thirty-two.
REGENT
* Holiday Season The holiday season at the Regent Theatre is marked this year by a succession of particularly good pictures. “Cinderella Jones” commences showing on December 24th., with three sessions. This will be the first New Zealand screening of a 1947 release. The film is in brand new condition, and the show imprinted thereon, tip-top. “Yolanda and the Thief” takes over for the 10 p.m. session. “Leave Her To Heaven” follows on December 26 and 27. This picture is drama at its best, and is in Technicolour. “Spanish Main” which is dated for December 28 and 30, is a swashbuckling adventure story with a powerful cast including Paul Henried and Maureen O’Hara. - The setting, of course, is against the sea. And running into' the new year is the picture recognised as 'M.G.M.’s biggest scale musical show, “Ziegfield Follies.” This has everything that makes for grand entertainment and is a “must not miss” for everyone. v
