WAR MEMORIALS
REACTION on the part of the -country , districts to the invitation to construct a common war memorial in the Borough is highly negative. It is obvious that all the main centres desire to erect their own memorial which will give them the same individuality as did the zoning in the remarkably successful Patriotic campaign throughout the war. Taneatua has already moved officially in this direction. E.dgecumbe is similar minded. With a lead such as this it is only a matter of time for the other centres to follow this
lead.. The Borough of Whakatane with its expanding population still remains at the cross-roads, but now that it has ' been clearly shown it must stand on its own legs, the town community can be depended upon to construct a memorial which will be as striking as it will be of utility value and thus meet all the wishes of the varying schools of thought.
