Kowhai Plantation Attacked
One of the few lines of kowhai trees in Dunedin is that which was planted outside the King Edward Technical College in Stuart Street, when it was built. One of the trees, which was not a native, but a Californian kowhai, died and had to be removed. A pest similar to the mealy-bug has now attacked thelines of trees above the entrance to the college, and the aid of the Department of Agriculture has been sought in an endeavour to preserve the trees. The pest has spread slowly from tree to tree, and has begun to infest the lower half of the plantation. It is thought possible that it may have been transferred-to the trees from the peelings of oranges or lemons.
