Old Cable Found at Reefton

When trenching for footpath foundations in Broadway, Reefton, contractors uncovered what is probably one of the oldest pieces of electrical equipment in New Zealand. About 60 years ago the Reefton Electric Light Company installed on the street sides of Broadway an underground cable for the supply of light to business houses in the street, and as Reefton was the first township in the southern hemisphere to be lit by electricity, the pieces of cable uncovered last week can be numbered amongst the oldest pieces of electrical equipment in the southern hemisphere. The cable is lead sheathed and in good condition considering its 60 years underground. The underground installation had to be replaced by overhead wiring because of moisture peneti ation, which, it is understood, affected the electrical conductor.
