THE ‘ASHES’
WITH cricket now so much to the fore it is interesting to record the origin of that famous expression, the ‘Ashes.’ Here it is:—ln the early Test matches, England possessed unrivalled supremacy and it can readily be appreciated the effect of a decisive defeat administered on an All England eleven by the Australians would have in the home of the game. When this came about, as it did, the whole of England went into mourning. An In Memoriam notice announcing the death of English cricket appeared in the country’s most influential newspaper and it was stated that the stumps used during, that famous game would be burned, the ashes cremated and taken to Australia. Thus the Ashes were born and every year the fight for the Ashes takes place between Australia and England.
