Friendly Seal

A large seal which came ashore on the beach at Studholme, South Canterbury, although presenting a hostile front at first, permitted the establishment of friendly relations by a Waimate angler, Mr *P. C. Berry. Mr Berry stroked the seal with a long stick, and eventually patted it with his hands. The seal followed Mr Berry across the shingle bank and plunged into the river, following so closely that he was unable to cast his line. After about two hours, during which time the seal behaved as a pet, it was coaxed across the shingle beach and, with some difficulty, persuaded to return to the'sea.
