WIN FOR NATIONAL
MR W. SULLIVAN RE-ELECTED
BAY OF PLENTY ELECTORATE HEAVY POLL RECORDED In the General Election last Wednesday, Mr W. Sullivan, sitting member for the Bay of Plenty was re-elected by a majority of 1798 votes. His Labour opponent, Mr R. Boord, polled remarkably well and in the eai’lier stages of the progress reports, appeared to have more than a sporting ehance of success. As the more remote country returns came to hand Mr Sullivan’s position consolidated until his powerful lead placed him well out of danger. It is interesting to note that the total vote recorded amounted toI 13,374 (including 91 servicemen’s), or 934 per cent, of the registered polling strength of the electorate which is 14,313. As far as can be gathered this was a record. The final result Was:— Sullivan, W. (National) 7586 Boord, R. (Labour) 5780 Lead for Sullivan 1798 Voting during the day was continued steadily and from an observer’s point of view the whole atmosphere may be described as distinctly “"sober’ for a general election. There were few last minute votes, and it was obvious that all who participated had taken their privilege seriously and made every provision for recording it in good time. Analysis of the returns shows that Whakatane strongly supported its resident member, and on the main was responsible for offsetting the substantial Labour vote accruing from the Rotorua district polls. It was definitely the Eastern Bay which returned Mr Sullivan, though as figures published below reveal, the Labour candidate, Mr R. Boord, did remarkably well in some of the local TAURANGA ELECTORATE MR DOIDGE RETURNED AGAIN Mr F. W. Doidge sitting member for Tauranga was returned by the substantial majority of 2595 votes. The Labour candidate (Mr D. A. Hill) scarcely improved his position on the 1943 election. Details are:— 1946 Doidge (National) 7449 Hill (Labour) 4854 .'Majority for Doidge 2595 1943 Doidge (Nat) 6719; Hill (Lab) 3325; Wilkinson (Ind) 397; Anguk (R.D.M) 355. On this occasion Labour lost 2000 -votes. POLLING RETURNS DISTRICT BOOTH FIGURES The following are the details of the district booth returns over the Bay of Plenty electorate:—
By way of comparison the following returns taken from the 1943 election when W. Sullivan polled 4932 votes aaginst W. Jonasen (Lab) 3381, will give comparative interest to electors:—

THE LICENSING POLL • CONTINUANCE AGAIN FAVOURED Although complete figures on the Licensing Poll are not yet available sufficient are to hand to indicate that once again there is an overwhelming majority in favour of Continuance. Also noticeable is a rising tide of opinion favouring State ownership and Control which appears to be gaining headway each successive election. Incomplete Dominion figures are as under:— Continuance 416,656 State Control ........ 102,806 Prohibition 231,317 For the Bay of Plenty the figures were: Continuance 4042; State Control 1151; Prohibition 2125. Tauranga: Continuance 5832; State Control 1123; Prohibition 3119. WAIRARAPA ELECTORATE k . . .. ' \ MR MACKLEY RETURNED Mr G. H. Mackley, Chairman of Directors of the Whakatane Paper Mills, who has many friends in this district, was again returned for the Wairarapa electorate. His majority is fine, being only 218, against the Labour candidate (G. A. Hansen) polling of 6336. In the 1943 election Mr Mackley held the seat for National against J. Robertson, by a margin of 417 votes.
