A FEATURE COLUMN “ANCHORS AWEIGH” i . ■ . Many Talents Blonde, blue-eyed Anne Crawford is a girl of many talents, including playwriting and poetry. When only ten she collaberated with her father by writing a script of a play for which. he wrote the music—a considerable achievement, which she crowned by producing the play herself in Edinburgh. Another New Star Never before have so many new stars been born in Hollywood. The latest is Arlene Dahl, who was signed only three months ago by Jack L. Warner after a short career as a fashion model in New York. She has been given the feminine lead in Warner Bros.’ “My Wild Irish Rose.” Spectacular Unveiling For the spectacular unveiling of Warner Bros.’ “Night and Day,”; Technicolour musical of the career and songs of Colt Porter, and celebrating the 20th. Anniversary of talking pictures, the entire front* of Warners’ Hollywood Theatre was covered with more than ten thousand pennants, in blue, white and gold, which spelled out the name in letters fifty feet high of the feature attraction. “Columbus” To Be Filmed 1 Sydney Box .anounced that he is putting into production immediately, ' his biggest project to date—a Technicolour film based on Raphael Sabatini’s book “Christopher Columbus.” Exteriors for the film will be shot in the Mditerranean, using an ex-war vessel rebuilt as the Santa Maria. A top-ranking international star will play the lead in the picture which was especially. written by Sabatini as a film story, and later rewritten in novel form. As a novel, it has sold over a quarter of a million copies. REGENT “Anchors Aweigh” (Sat. 30, Mon. 2, Tues. 3.) This picture, starring Gene Kelly (remember him in ‘Cover Girl’?), Jose Iturbi (of ‘Thousands Cheer’), and Kathryn Grayson, is probably the brightest musical of the year to visit the Regent screen. Melody and merriment combined in twenty elaborate production numbers, with a thunderous Navy background, make for grand entertainment. No theatre patron could help but thoroughly enjoy this show. “Our . Vines Have Tender Grapes” (Wed. 27, Thurs. 28, Fri. 29) is the film commencing its screening season tonight, when it wil be run in conjunction with the election progress results. It is an excellent picture, and one with all-round appeal.
