Certified Rye Spreads Weeds When a sample of thistle (Silybum Marianum) made its appearance in local pastures recently the Whakatane County Council received an identifying letter from the Plant Research Bureau, Wellington, describing methods for its eradication. Councillors declared that the thistle had been definitely proved to have found its way into the district through the purchases of certified rye grass from the Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay areas and it was decided to bring this fact to the notice of the Department of Agriculture, requesting investigation and greater safeguards in future. .
