THE SCHOOL BATHS

USE BY SWIMMING CLUB

COMMITTEE’S APPROVAL

The Whakatane School Committee, at its last meeting, granted the Whakatane Swimming Club, subject to certain conditions, the use of the school swimming baths for the summer months and accepted the Borough Council’s offer to place the committee on a fiat rate of £5 per year for water to fill them. Commenting on the matter, Mr F. W. Lysaght observed that it was mainly children who were going to be taught to swim by club instructors, & as the hours proposed (after 5 p.m. three nights per week) would not interfere in any way with the normal use of the baths by school children, he saw no objection to the letting the club have the use of the facility.

The Chairman (Mr J. W. Wilson) also observed that in his opinion, where the school had a facility which could be of use to the community, without interfering with the activities of the children, it should be made available. The club, he understood, would provide two qualified instructors each night, and this alone, would be of benefit to learners.

It was decided that the use of the pool should be granted to the following conditions: — 1. Baths to be used by members of the Swimming Club only, for instructional purposes only; (2) The club to have the use of the baths after 5 p.m. three nights per week, the time of termination of the activities each night to be fixed by the club; (3) The club to provide two qualified instructors each night; (4) The .baths not to be open to the general public nor to spectators; (51 Expenses of emptying, cleaning and refilling the baths, cleaning the dressing sheds, and repairing any damage to be the responsibility of the club; (6) The committee to reserve the right to terminate the arrangement at any time if considered necessary; (7) That each night ' after swimming, the baths and dressing shed be locked, instructors to have, charge of the keys.
