BENEFIT CONCERT
POPULAR EDGECUMBE FUNCTION
ASSISTING SCOUT FUNDS
Quality was the keynote of the whole programme presented -at Edgecumbe last Tuesday evening on behalf of the local Scout troop. The standard of entertainment was excellent, and the local artists who provided the entire show are to be warmly congratulated upon the standard they achieved. It was a pleasure to note the further appearance of the Whakatane Orchestral Society, which acquitted itself extremely well, and furnished a number of new musical brackets. Mr B. Topp who sang ‘Trees’ and ‘Vale’ in splendid fashion has a remarkable tenor voice widen would assure him a warm reception in the larger cities. Another promising young artist is Miss M. Huish, who as pianist can be described as a musician of the first water. Mrs J. Rushbrook was once again heard to good effect in a number of solos which were rendered in her usual polished style. Two newcomers of the local stage were Mrs J. Jessop and Mr K. Francis who sang in soft harmony ‘lrish Lullaby’ and ‘Mellow Moon’ to string accompaniment. The vocal trio from Otakiri, Mrs and Miss Dawn Armstrong, and Mrs Shaw was also heard in a pleasing bracket of harmonised songs, while Mrs G. G. Newman supplied the comedy touch with a bright interlude of Scottish humour. Mrs Shaw (Edgecumbe) was another soloist who added materially to the concert’s success, whilst Mrs Jessop also pleasingly supplied' a bracket of solos in the second half. . The Whakatane Methodist Ladies Guild produced a humorous and at the same time interesting play with a deep moral behind it. ‘Black Coupons’ was exceptionally well portrayed and earned out. The Edgecumbe Scouts produced ‘Ghosts’ in a realistic fashion, and had the Junior section of the large audience shivering mometarily in its shoes. The boys did a splendid job and are to be congratulated. Items on the piano accordion were supplied by Mr H. Webber. At a suitable interval, Commissioner N. Matthews, presented Scoutmaster Rogers with his warrant, and complimented him on the progress of his troop. Mr Clem Le Lievre; who is patron lo the Edgecumbe troop, addressed the gathering on the widespread nature of the Scouting movement, pointing out that as an international brotherhood, its ideals were sadly needed in the world'today. He urged all present to assist the present campaign for funds for sending overseas to the 1947 Jamboree, a group of district boys. At the conclusion of the concert, Mr J. Neilsen, Chairman of the Edgecumbe Scout Committee, took the opportunity of thanking the artists, the committee, and all present for their support and patronage.
