CHARGE OF FIGHTING
MAORI BEFORE COURT
FOURTEEN DAYS’ IMPRISONMENT
Fourteen days imprisonment was the sentenced passed on a Maori, Johnny Bishop, who faced the court on two charges, one concerning being found drunk in Clifton Road, and the other, fighting in a local hotel. The offences occurred last Wednesday-. Messrs. L. H. Brov/n and C. S. Armstrong J.P.s, were on the Bench.
Sergeant Farrell stated that the assault was unprovoked. The victim was an elderly man, Frederick McLean, of Poroporo. There was another witness prepared, if necessary, to give corroborative evidence.
Accused, who pleaded guilty to both charges, and had nothing to say was convicted and discharged on the first count, and convicted and sentenced to/14 days’ imprisonment in the Whakatane Police goal on the other. \ ,
