WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

81-ANNUAL FEDERATION

The Bi-Annual Council meeting of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Federation of Women’s Institutes, was held in the Taneatua Hall recently. There was a §ood attendance of delegates from most of the Institutes. The singing of the hymn, “Sun of my Soul,” opened the proceedings, and the Aspirations were read by Mrs Baird, followed by the Ode to Friendship. Ths President, Mrs K. Brown, welcomed delegates, members and visitors.

The Bi-Annual report was received and a report was also given on the 'recent Drama Festival held in Taneatua. The credit balance amounted to £ls.

The Drama Festival held in Opotiki last Friday was also successful. Much correspondence was dealt with and remits discussed and voted upon.

The Institute reports given by delegates of the past six months activities, were most interesting and in many, showed that membership was still growing. During the afternoon, Mrs K. Stewart, V. 0., gave an instructive talk on the forthcoming Eistedfod, and was able to answer, many questions. The speaker also demons strated the making of a floral sand lady. A most amusing sketch was presented by two Taneatua members, Mrs Bennett and Mrs Gardner, the players receiving a warm ovation. The silver fruit dish, donated by Mrs Le Lievre, for the best actress or actresses at the Drama Festival each year, went to Mrs Spiers and Miss Joan Blair (Edgecumbe) who tied, and Mrs K. Stewart (Whakatane).

The results of the day’s competitions were: Jar of marmalade, Waimana 1; Thornton 2; Edgecumbe 3. Jam jar of flowers, Waimana 1; Woodlands 2; Thornton 3. Bar of soap, Opotiki 1; Waimana 2; Woodlands 3. Frock, Thornton 1; Edgecumbe 2; Manawahe 3. A beautiful iced fruit cake made by Mi’s Withy Snr. for competition, was won by Mrs McMillan, Opotiki.

An open discussion was then held and many subjects were handled.

Afternoon tea was served and the National Anthem closed the meeting.
