OFFICIAL ANOMALY
TOO YOUNG FOR TAXI LICENSE
RETURNED SOLDIER’S DILEMMA
Strong criticism of the law as it applied to the granting of taxi . driver’s licenses, was indulged in by Mr P. J. Phelan) Chairman of the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority, at the sitting in Whakatane last Tuesday.
The subject arose out of the'application of Mr W. A. Marr for a taxi license to serve the district of Matata. As the evidence came out applicant stated that he was -22 years of age and had served for three years in the Navy. “I am sorry,” observed Mr Phelan, “but that knocks the' application right on -the head. The law stipulates that to be a holder of d taxi license applicant must be years of age. This map is apparently capable of going overseas to fight for us but according to the law he is not fit to drive a taxi. This is one of the anomalies which should be investigated. I think however that under the circumstances I might make a recommendation to the Minister in this case for some relaxation of the regulations.
